Pure nerve and muscle swirling in anticipation of the race ahead. A bet on the winning horse, and unlike in Bad Bunny’s song, this horse doesn’t feel alone on the track. Accompanied by its competitors, its jockey, the cheering from the stands, and a sound marking the start of the race, it charges forward.

From its origins in the English countryside to the present day, not to mention Queen Elizabeth II’s special devotion to the sport, horse racing continues to captivate fans around the world. Spectators flock to racetracks across the globe, following their favorites on the path to victory.

This Isn’t What I Planned to Write

This isn’t what I thought I’d write, this isn’t what I thought I’d publish. But as I was writing about spring equinoxes, metaphors of renewal, and an endless cycle—just like in Disney’s The Lion King—it hit me: you, me, all of us, are like flowers.

You might be wondering where on earth I’m coming from, what plant I’ve smoked, or what thorn pricked me. But before you jump to any conclusions, let me say, without it being held against me in court, that I ask you to hear me out until the end.

On March 20, we welcomed a new season: spring—the season that, despite the allergies, we all greet with open arms (and tissues in our pockets). It’s the prelude to summer, when sunlight gradually increases, stretching our days and shortening our nights. Many poets, writers, and great figures throughout history have reflected on this time of year—a season that disrupts our closets and throws our plans into chaos, because, as the saying goes, “Spring fever is in the air.”

Getting back to the point, we are in a time of change. Not only do the flowers bloom (excuse the redundancy), but we also bloom with them. It’s during this period that we shine our brightest, that we lay down the roots to keep us steady through summer. It’s when we stop seeking answers by plucking petals from a white daisy and know for certain that when the sun rises, so will we.

We’re in that season when anything can happen: a wave of nonsense, an opportunity, a bouquet of flowers, a sign. But keep in mind, no matter how much you expect it, you’ll never see it coming.

Located just over 20 km from the Spanish border, this town has been chosen time and again by Europe’s most elite society. How could we forget that Coco Chanel opened her first store outside of Paris here in 1915, or that the Art Deco beachfront casino likely witnessed some of the most iconic moments of the Roaring Twenties, while children spun tirelessly on the elegant carousel still standing beside it today?

The glamorous French Basque Country effortlessly seduces anyone who visits. It’s the perfect seaside setting, filled with the scent of salt, where it’s easy to disconnect. One can almost imagine riding the waves in this former fishing village that modern vacationers now roam from end to end without pause.

The contrast of fabrics, the importance of the pattern, the opposition of colors, the tailoring... create the common thread of Femme, La Fragancia, the latest Alfonso Pérez's designs, Ángel Schelesser's creative director, who wanted to be inspired by the perfume of the firm for this latest autumn/winter Madrid company's collection.

"Perfume has always been closely linked to fashion, they have always gone hand in hand. Angel Schlesser is a brand that also shares the name of the perfume. Therefore, it was interesting to know a little of the process and work these new designs as an alchemy." The creative director tells us, who in turn explains: "The flowers, the wood.... The mix of textures and transparencies... The gauze of the skirts reminds me of when you apply perfume and it remains in the air, they are fabrics and sensations so ethereal..."

Alfonso Pérez received the artistic direction of the firm just when its founder, Ángel Fernández Ovejero, received the National Fashion Design Award for his professional career and his contribution to Spanish fashion, despite this, Alfonso himself confirms that this recognition was not an extra pressure: "Ángel Schelesser is the 90s' brand par excellence, the most powerful brand of two decades of Spanish fashion. I didn't take it as a pressure, the fact of entering this house is a pressure, but I try to take it normally and do an honest job as much as I can".

With a blunt sentence: "The only thing they can't erase is your identity." published on the designer's Instagram (@elcostureroelectrico), one could define Alfonso's personal union with the legacy and heritage of Ángel Schlesser who assures: "A brand, nowadays and always, what it has to have is identity and differentiate itself a little from the rest". That essence is what, as Pérez states, prevails when the lights go out and the models step off the catwalk: "The solidity of a brand, the sophistication and the ethereal. Very elegant designs, but with a lot of presence" that continue to make the firm a benchmark and an example of Spanish fashion despite the current panorama of the sector.

Fashion has always been a reflection of society, an indication of the moment in which we find ourselves and as Alfonso recognizes "We're going through a dark tunnel, I really think there's a big gap, we don't know where we're going, what reins to take, but also because the social moment in which we are is very complex and complicated". He continues: "We come from that 90s' hangover, I think there is currently a total standbye, we're in a very flat moment." Despite this, the designer doesn't lose hope because the most important thing in this profession is really the illusion and passion: "Apart from health, of course, one of the most important things in life is the illusion. Money, material things come and go. Not to be negative, life is a journey, you can have all the money in the world, but if you don't have illusion, it's useless". Alfonso Pérez concludes: "I've been with the firm for 8 months, I haven't stopped since I arrived and honestly I don't think I'm very conscious of what I've done. I'm only interested in working and doing well, but I've come this far, no one can take this away from me, no matter how long it lasts".
